Death of La Marque boy, 15, may have been meningitis

Galveston County health officials are investigating the death of a 15-year-old boy over the weekend that possibly resulted from meningitis. 

Officials were notified by Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, where the La Marque Middle School student died, of a possible case of meningitis, said Galveston County Health District spokesman Kurt Koopman.  

“All clinical indications show that’s what it was, so that’s what we’re treating it as,” he said. “But there’s been no lab verification on that.”  

Koopman said the health district will be working to find out whom the teen may have had close, intimate contact-such as sharing utensils or a significant other- with. Health district officials are working with school officials.
