TEXAS CITY — Despite earlier plans to build the new county animal shelter on
land near Jack Brooks Park, County Judge Jim Yarbrough said Tuesday the animal
resource center approved by voters last fall will remain in Texas City.
The judge said Texas City officials offered up land adjacent to the Joe Vickery
Animal Shelter for construction of the new center.
Because Texas City and the nearby communities of San Leon and Bacliff account
for 40 percent of the animal shelter’s calls for service, keeping it in Texas
City was the logical choice, Yarbrough said.
The Galveston County Animal Resource Center would be housed in a new building on
Loop 197 near state Highway 146, with the plan being to tear down the Vickery
Animal Shelter, Yarbrough said.
