Annual Animal Summit and Expo to be held April 24th

Press Release
 April 16, 2010

Galveston County and Cities – Continued improvements in the arena of animal services and a new Animal Resource Center will be the focus of this year’s Animal Summit and Expo being held April 24th at Runge Park, 4605 Peck Avenue in Santa Fe, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.   The summit held each year is an effort of the Galveston County Health District and members of the Galveston County Animal Services Advisory Committee.

Those expected to attend the Summit include County and City elected officials, members of the Galveston County United Board of Health, and local individuals interested in animal services provided in Galveston County.

During the summit there will be a facilitated discussion about the new Galveston County Animal Resource Center which is currently being built in Texas City.  There will also be information on preparing for hurricane season with an emphasis on what to do with pets, along with information on pet disease prevention and control.

The Health District works under a five year “Strategic Health Plan” adopted in March that is designed to make measurable improvements in the health of Galveston County. Included in the District’s plan as a priority, is the new Animal Resource Center which will more than double the capacity of the existing shelter.

“We are more than excited that in the near future our Animal Services will be working out of a new state-of-the-art facility,” states Dr. Mark Guidry, GCHD CEO and Galveston County Health Authority.  “Of course, we thank the voters for approving bonds for the construction of the new Animal Resource Center which has been needed for quite some time.”

Assisting GCHD in planning the Summit is Lark Tedesco with Galco Rescue Rangers and members of the Galveston County Animal Services Advisory Committee.  Members represent local cities and others who work closely with Health District staff to continually make improvements in the area of Animal Services.
